DBF 2003-2004 posted by Lone Shepherd on April 27, 2004
Tim and I have returned from Wichita. It was an enlightening and activity packed weekend, as DBF weekend always is.
37 teams submitted reports this year, a DBF record. Of those, 26 passed tech inspection, and 21 had scoring flights.
Friday's highlights included torrential rain and storms, but teams were undeterred and proceeded with the business of getting tables and equipment setup in the hangar.
Saturday morning was a bit wet and rainy, but it eventually cleared up to be the windy Wichita old-time DBF'ers know and love, with flights starting around 11 AM.
Sunday morning revealed beautiful weather, with no clouds and minimal wind. As the day warmed up, some clouds rolled in, and the day saw a nice afternoon lull with no flights. Teams with plenty of good scores were waiting for optimal conditions to attempt to better previous scores, while other teams were busy in the hangar trying to get through tech inspection or rebuild crashed aircraft. These factors led to a 4:15 PM rush on the flight line, with about 10 teams lining up to give it one last go.
All and all it was an exciting competition, and between the two of us, Tim and I were able to get pictures and data for almost every team, which will be up on the site shortly.
